The 27 Enneagram Subtypes
Each of the nine types comes in three versions, depending on which survival instinct dominates: self-preservation (SP), social (SO), or one-to-one (SX). The instinct decides where the type’s passion gets spent — and one subtype per type runs against the passion’s usual current: the countertype. If your type never quite fit the textbook description, your subtype is usually the missing variable.
SO 1 — Social One: 'Non-adaptability'
The social One: the unconscious model of the right way. How the social instinct cools the One's anger into teaching, control and rigid principle.
SO 2 — Social Two: 'Ambition'
The social Two: the seducer of groups. Pride as influence — the power behind thrones, generosity with a strategic angle.
SO 3 — Social Three: 'Prestige'
The social Three: achievement on stage. The most competitive Three — climbing, shining, selling — vanity in full daylight.
SO 4 — Social Four: 'Shame'
The social Four: the sufferer who compares and comes up short — melancholy as home, victimhood as language, sensitivity as identity.
SO 5 — Social Five: 'Totem'
The social Five: avarice for knowledge and ultimate values — the expert among experts, connected through ideas instead of feelings.
SO 6 — Social Six: 'Duty'
The social Six: safety through rules and reference systems — precise, dutiful, sure of the guidelines, anxious under the certainty.
SO 7 — Social Seven: 'Sacrifice'
The social Seven — the countertype: the anti-glutton. Appetite deferred in service of others — idealistic, ascetic, needing to be good.
SO 8 — Social Eight: 'Solidarity'
The social Eight — the countertype: aggression in service of others. The protector — loyal, helpful, a social antisocial.
SO 9 — Social Nine: 'Participation'
The social Nine — the countertype: the workaholic group-fuser. Sloth hidden inside tireless service to the group's needs.
SP 1 — Self-Preservation One: 'Worry'
The self-preservation One: the true perfectionist. How the SP instinct bends the One's anger into worry, warmth and relentless self-improvement.
SP 2 — Self-Preservation Two: 'Privilege'
The self-preservation Two — the countertype: the childlike charmer who attracts care rather than giving it first.
SP 3 — Self-Preservation Three: 'Security'
The self-preservation Three — the countertype: vanity for having no vanity. The good person, working hard, refusing the spotlight it still wants.
SP 4 — Self-Preservation Four: 'Tenacity'
The self-preservation Four — the countertype: the long-suffering stoic who endures instead of dramatizing, working to earn what others were given.
SP 5 — Self-Preservation Five: 'Castle'
The self-preservation Five: the guarded sanctuary. Avarice as walls — boundaries, privacy, and needing so little that no one can reach in.
SP 6 — Self-Preservation Six: 'Warmth'
The self-preservation Six: the friendliest Six. Fear expressed as the search for protective alliances — warm, hesitant, self-doubting.
SP 7 — Self-Preservation Seven: 'Keepers of the Castle'
The self-preservation Seven: the pragmatic networker. Gluttony as alliance-building — cheerful, self-interested, always with options.
SP 8 — Self-Preservation Eight: 'Satisfaction'
The self-preservation Eight: the survivor. Lust as timely satisfaction of material needs — armed, direct, intolerant of frustration.
SP 9 — Self-Preservation Nine: 'Appetite'
The self-preservation Nine: comfort as merging. Sloth expressed through routines, food, sleep and the concrete pleasures of daily life.
SX 1 — One-to-One One: 'Zeal'
The sexual One — the countertype: the only openly angry One. Reformer's fire aimed at specific people, entitled to improve them.
SX 2 — One-to-One Two: 'Seduction'
The sexual Two: classical seduction aimed at one person — irresistible, dedicated, boundary-blurring, a force of nature.
SX 3 — One-to-One Three: 'Charisma'
The sexual Three: achievement through attractiveness — the promoter of important others, the beautiful supporter who can't talk about itself.
SX 4 — One-to-One Four: 'Competition'
The sexual Four: envy that fights — demanding, shameless, competitive, making others feel the pain it can't bear alone.
SX 5 — One-to-One Five: 'Confidence'
The sexual Five — the countertype: the romantic Five. Avarice bent toward one ideal confidant — vibrant inside, sealed outside.
SX 6 — One-to-One Six: 'Strength'
The sexual Six — the countertype: the counterphobic Six. Fear answered by attack — strong, intimidating, ready, trusting only itself.
SX 7 — One-to-One Seven: 'Suggestibility'
The sexual Seven: the idealistic dreamer. Gluttony for a higher world — rose-colored glasses, enchanted plans, love-struck optimism.
SX 8 — One-to-One Eight: 'Possession'
The sexual Eight: the charismatic rebel. Lust as energetic takeover — intense, magnetic, needing to dominate the whole scene.
SX 9 — One-to-One Nine: 'Fusion'
The sexual Nine: merging with one beloved. Sloth as taking on another's feelings, opinions and life — kind, gentle, unassertive.
