The 9 Levels of Development: Healthy, Average, Unhealthy

Riso and Hudson’s crucial addition to the enneagram was vertical: each type spans nine levels of development, from liberated (level 1) through average (4–6) to pathological (9). The same Eight is a magnanimous protector at level 2 and an intimidating bully at level 7. Same engine — radically different life.
Most of us live in the average range and move a level or two with stress and security. That’s why type descriptions can feel alternately flattering and insulting: they’re describing the whole band. Reading only the healthy end produces “I’m definitely this type” inflation; reading only the unhealthy end produces denial.
The practical use: learn your type’s warning signs — the specific behaviors that mark a slide down a level — and its release points upward. The Health Check-in tool in Pro makes this a recurring practice rather than a one-time reading.
What moves you up and down
Three forces move people along the band. Downward: sustained stress, unexamined losses, and — the tradition’s sharper observation — success at the pattern itself: the Three whose image keeps winning, the Two whose indispensability keeps working, each descends while apparently thriving, because every win tightens the identification. Upward: honest self-observation, relationships that see through the pattern kindly, and deliberate practice of the type’s growth direction. Nobody levels up by being told their flaws; the mechanism is catching the pattern in the act, repeatedly, with more curiosity than shame.
Reading the levels in daily life
You can estimate your current band with one question per center of your life: how much choice do you have about your pattern this month? Healthy range: the pattern is one tool among several — you can do the Nine-merge or skip it. Average range: the pattern runs by default and choosing otherwise takes effort. Unhealthy range: the pattern runs you, and alternatives have stopped feeling real. The Health Check-in tool asks a calibrated version of this monthly; trend beats snapshot.
Why this dimension matters more than type
Two healthy people of any two types will build a better relationship, team or family than two average people of “compatible” types — health trumps matching everywhere the enneagram is applied. This is also the honest answer to “which type is the best/worst”: none; every type at level 2 is magnificent and every type at level 7 is destructive, in its own signature key.
A worked example: one Two, three altitudes
Track a single Two across the spectrum. At healthy levels she gives without a receipt: real empathy, boundaries intact, care that leaves the receiver stronger and freer. At average levels the giving grows strings — she’s earned a say in your choices, hasn’t she? — and the warmth starts arriving with a ledger. At unhealthy levels the ledger is the relationship: manipulation through obligation, martyrdom on display, love indistinguishable from control. Nothing in her type changed; every trait kept its name and changed its meaning. This is why two people of the same type can seem barely related, and why the tradition insists the vertical question — how free is this person from their own compulsion right now? — matters more than the horizontal one of which compulsion it is.
Using the levels on yourself
Self-locating on a nine-rung ladder invites vanity, so use behavioral markers instead. Three honest indicators: how you respond to contradiction (curiosity at healthy levels, defensiveness at average, retaliation below); how much of your type’s agenda runs your day (a tool you use, a habit you notice, or a compulsion you can’t see); and what feedback from intimates sounds like lately (appreciation, managed complaints, or alarm). Movement down is usually gradual and disguised as justified — anyone would be this controlling given my circumstances. Movement up is almost always deliberate: the practices on our growth page are, in levels language, climbing equipment. The test result tells you your ladder; the season tells you your rung.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be at different levels in different areas of life?
Your center of gravity is one band, but domains lag — many people are healthiest at work and most average at home, or vice versa. The lagging domain is usually where the growth work is.
How fast can someone move between levels?
Down: fast under acute stress. Up: slowly — months of practice per level is a realistic rhythm. Brief peak moments happen, but the band is about where you live.
Is 'average' bad?
No — it's where most functional adult life happens. The point of naming it is direction: knowing what one level up looks like for your type turns vague self-improvement into a specific practice.
Can other people see my level?
Usually more clearly than you can. The pattern is loudest from outside — which is why honest relationships are the strongest single lever for moving up.
How fast can someone move between levels?
Downward, fast — a bad season can drop the average band in weeks. Upward is slower and deliberate: sustained practice, honest feedback and usually some grief. The asymmetry is why maintenance practices matter even in good seasons.
