Levels of Development
The levels of development — Riso and Hudson’s signature contribution — add the vertical dimension: each type spans nine levels from liberated (1) through average (4–6) to pathological (9). The same Eight is a magnanimous protector at level 2 and an intimidating bully at level 7; same engine, radically different life. This is why type descriptions feel alternately flattering and insulting — they describe the whole band — and why ‘which type is best’ has no answer: every type at level 2 is magnificent, every type at level 7 destructive, each in its signature key.
The practical measure is choice: how much freedom do you have about your pattern this month? In the healthy range the pattern is one tool among several; in the average range it runs by default and choosing otherwise costs effort; in the unhealthy range it runs you, and alternatives stop feeling real. Movement happens continuously — down through sustained stress and, notably, through success at the pattern itself (each win tightening the identification); up through honest self-observation, relationships that see through the pattern kindly, and deliberate practice of the growth direction.
The levels also outrank type-matching everywhere the enneagram is applied: two healthy people of any types build better relationships and teams than two average people of ‘compatible’ ones. The levels guide covers mechanics; the Health Check-in tool turns the choice-question into a monthly trend.
